Frisco Family Services and Safety Town
It has been such a hot and humid week. The last two days we have had some loud and beautiful thunder and lightening storms. The actual temperature has only been in the low 90's, so not really that bad, but you factor in the humidity and you just sweat and get wet, but it does not cool you down!! I'm not a big sweat-er, but it's all different here!! Anyway, we have kept busy so far this week. Yesterday our ward was in charge of a "service" activity in conjunction with the Frisco Family Services. They provide lunch for some low-income children who normally qualify for free school lunch, but probably wouldn't get lunch in the summer when there is no school. So we donated all of the stuff for lunch and then went on Monday to hand it out to the kids. Aliza asked Stacia (the RS Pres.), "What is this place, like a hotel or something?" (It was at an apartment complex.) On the way home we talked about the different reasons parents aren't able to make enough money to feed their children, and how regardless of why, those kids wouldn't be able to eat without help. An old Chinese proverb says, "Charity sees the need not the cause." But most of all we talked about how grateful we are for our many blessings. :)
Today, Parker's scout troop had a really fun family activity. The Frisco Fire Station has a program where they have groups of kids come in and they teach them about bike, skateboard and skating safety, then they get to go out and practice their new skills in Safety Town. It is this whole miniature town complete with a church (this IS the bible belt) and a newspaper building, a hospital and post office and some houses. It has stop lights and signs and one way streets and cross walks. The kids all had a blast, ans Aliza asked when we could go back. Afterwards, we went over to Frisco Commons Park and ate lunch and the cute scout leader had some water games. It was fun!

Water games at Frisco Commons. They were sopping wet when it was all done!! But they were nice and cool!!
The kids are really having fun and meeting new kids. I think that I found a place for Liza to take tumbling and hip hop. We may take Parker for a baseball tryout next Friday night. We still need to check to see if this team is in the Sunday league or not. We are still keeping our ears open for a team that doesn't play on Sundays for Tyler. McKinney has a fall league for rec that doesn't play Sundays, so we may opt for that for both of them. One of our friends in the ward who have a little boy in between ours is playing football, and the coach told them to plan on Sunday practices and games. They are not doing Sundays, and are hoping he is not penalized for it!! I personally am counting the days until school starts. Not because I'm sick of 'em :) but because it will be good to be on a schedule and get into the swing of things. Tyler will be 12 in six days! He is so excited!! We are all getting excited for Maris' mom and my parents to come down!! The month is going to fly by and we will soon be longing for summer again!!
Dallas Zoo
Today we went to the Dallas Zoo (http://www.dallaszoo.com/). We have heard that the Fort Worth Zoo is a lot better than Dallas, but we are used to Hogle, not that there is anything wrong with Hogle, but it's no San Diego. Anyway, we really liked it! It had a really neat Children's Petting Zoo. I think that the kids liked the bird exhibit the best. The birds just would land on them. One parrot landed on Parker's red hat and kept trying to pull off the little round thing on top of it.
I was really proud of Liza, because she held really still and let the birds eat her birdseed and worms. Yeah, worms. Gross. 
Parker of course loved it.
There was a really neat exhibit area for the chimps and the gorillas. They have 4 gorillas. Parker wanted to climb into the chimp exhibit because he saw a lizard and wanted to catch it. Yeah, we're lookin' to get on the Today show: kid falls into chimp enclosure. I guess we may get to meet Matt Lauer, maybe next time we'll let him :).
In the Children's area there were a lot of hands on exhibits and Parker found out how he and Tyler could be Jr. Zoo Keepers. We liked the bearded dragon and the girls said they wished their parent's would let them have geckos and tarantulas.
These are Bongos. They are quite cool looking. Yes, Aliza took very good care of her baby through the whole zoo. We were very hot. The humidity is up this weekend.
Is this not THE cutest thing you have ever seen? We also had the opportunity to watch the Python or whatever the big gigantic snake is yawn. It had a huge mouth!!!
Now this was an interesting exhibit. They had Magpies housed with Bald Eagles. Who puts Magpies in a zoo? I hate Magpies. The eagles were just lookin' at them like they couldn't believe they had to live with them either. Apparently though, when you are lucky enough to live in an area without magpies, they are a treat to see. Whatever.

Finally, here is my latest craft project. I think that it turned out cute. It took no time or skill, and it was cheap. My favorite things!!
And I finally got the decals hung up in Aliza's bathtub...I love them!!

Miscellaneous yada yada yada...
The kids and I ventured out yesterday to "Old McKinney" looking for the library. McKinney has a "square" in the middle of town that is very old-time and quaint. It has a lot of specialty shops and an old fashioned soda fountain shop and some rare books, antique shops and an old time pharmacy. There are some cute stores and I have every intention of going back with my mom, but none of my kids wanted to walk around and look...hmmmm. The kids did think that this pink hummer was pretty funny. I didn't know Mary Kay was givin' out Hummers!! :)
Then we made our way to the library. Oh, did I tell you that all the streets downtown are one-way streets? So if you pass up a primo parking spot you have to go all the way around the block and hope it is still there!! Any way, the library is 2 stories, the kids section is huge. Well at least compared to Farmington. Parker, of course wanted to go upstairs to non-fiction and we found some books about bearded dragons, geckos, how to write and speak in Chinese and a Texas Bug Book. It is an A-Z of all the bugs, good, bad and ugly in Texas. I didn't sleep very well last night!! Tyler put his name on hold for the next Ranger's Apprentice book and found 2 he wanted to read. Aliza found a couple of cute picture books and some chapter books that I hope we can get her excited about! Here is a cute picture of them at the bench outside. That grandpa is reading "Oh the places you'll go" by Dr. Seuss. I love that book!!

When we finished at the library, we went to the soda shop and ate ice cream cones. mmmmmmm.
The wall in the soda shop was painted to show how many miles to other places it is from McKinney. There was a juke box that played little records. Real records, singles, not CD's. So we popped in a couple quarters and listened to a little Elvis. Parker likes Elvis. (?)
K, so Brandy wanted me to put on some pic's of the kitchen. She said that the other pic's didn't really give her a good idea of where we live. So here are some pictures of the kitchen. And if ya'll want to see more of the house, I'll tell ya the same thing I told her, come on down!!
Haircut
So I am no Victoria Beckham, but I could be if I had those big glasses and a little less nose...why didn't anyone ever tell me about my nose? Anyway, I don't have the long front hair like VB, but we got the one side alright....I went to Ulta and, small world, the girl who was cutting hair is Parker's Bear leader in Scouts!! So then I felt a little better, and she did a great job! I got a color too, and I really like the color. But I am really glad I have found someone here to cut my hair! Now I just need a dr., a chiropractor, a Texas driver's license and some Texas plates on the car. Oh, and an ortho and a dentist. But I think I already know who I am going to go to for both of those.
Creepy, crawly Saturday
Warning: this post has a lot of pictures that one who is skittish may not like very much, but I felt like the pictures really made the story. And it is a semi-long story!!
The Day started out like any other. But then Parker came down stairs all excited because his tarantula had crawled up the glass in the night and was at the top of his cage. This is the exact reason I insisted on a LOCKING top. They have been known to push the lid off the non-locking tops and escape. I like Hairy, but not in my house.
So, the morning progresses. Around here, everyone has their houses sprayed for bugs, and for good reason. The world's deadliest spiders are found right here in Texas. There are sooooo many bugs around here. I have never seen so many bugs in my life. Anyway, so we had the inside of the house re-sprayed this last week, and Maris was touching up the outside with the Ortho Home defense stuff around the windows and in the eaves, etc. While he was spraying out by the front door, this little Black Widow came crawling out to die:
So then, we decided to go to the Heard Museum http://www.heardmuseum.org/ with the Egans. They have this exhibit of live snakes that are indigenous to Texas. We knew the kids would love it. It was a really neat museum with a ton of hands on exhibits and information about the plants and wildlife that is around here. We are loving getting to know the area and appreciate the differences between here and home. Here is Liza and Rhegan looking at the bones and butterflies.
This interesting exhibit showed us the differences between a common water snake and a deadly cottonmouth. They both really looked similar, so we made sure that Parker and Tyler could see how much the same they look, so they should just STAY AWAY from them.

I can't remember what the one below is, but I do know that I don't ever want to see one.
Below is a harmless garter snake. I thought that his orange and green stripes were cute. They also have those one snakes here that are yellow and black and red and POISONOUS. They are pretty, but bright for a reason.
So then we went on a hike through the area. Hikes here are different, because there are no mountains to hike through, just wooded areas and swampy places. We enjoyed the pretty trees and the sounds and the butterflies and the birds. We saw some interesting spiders in webs and saw lots of frogs. We stayed on the trail so as not to encounter other stuff.....ewwwww. Liza liked it for a while, but the hotter and sweatier and stickier we got, the less she liked it. The boys were in heaven!!
Liza kept picking up sticks and flipping them around, we asked her to stop, but you know how tempting sticks can be :). Suddenly she shrieked. Very loudly. Something got her on her back and her leg and bit and/or stung her. So today she is very itchy and quite swollen!! We don't know what it was, but we are watching for the red line to come up from it that will tell us if it is poisonous or not. Liza said THAT is why she doesn't like to play outside.
We went to Braum's and got some ice cream and came back home to enjoy our bug-free environment!! Well except for the tarantula. But he's in a cage...:) It was a great day by our standards, cuz ya know a lot of people in our house like that kind of stuff!!Victoria Beckham
Have I mentioned that I normally get my hair cut every 5 weeks and it has been 6. (BRANDY?!?) I want to find someone to make me look like this. Hair, not face. I'm looking for a hiardresser, not a plastic surgeon!! Anyway...every morning I get up and do my hair and hate it. Argh!
Room with a view!
As I opened blinds in the house this morning, I noticed something distinctly different about my view. A sure sign that they are getting ready to break ground on the lot next door is the introduction of the port-a-potty. Thank goodness they figure that after they break ground there is about a 90 day time frame until the home is done!! Now we have an extra potty, in case all ours are being used...ugh!! :o)
I am a Mother.
Just finished reading this book and it is FULL of great things that are inspiring and uplifting. Jane Clayson uses great quotes from some of my favorite leaders, including President Faust and Elder Holland. My favorite chapter reminds us that we are all daughters of our Father in Heaven and that we should try to "walk in each others' shoes" and not judge the decisions that other women have made. It is a great book!!

So in the 2 weeks it has been since I started looking at blogs and trying to figure it out, I noticed this game that is played amoungst bloggers called "tag." It is the same as when you get a chain letter in your e-mail, ya know, answer these questions, then send it to a certain amount of friends and then they send it back to you. This works in much the same way. My cute friend in Washington, Jamie, tagged me today. So, I am supposed to list 7 different facts about myself: random, silly, funny, whatever. Then I choose 7 new people to tag. It's fun to learn new things about your friends. If you are tagged, please list the rules when you post.
So here they are....
1. I love laundry. Everything about it. I love that I start out with a big pile of dirty stuff and it comes out clean stuff. I love to fold it and put it into organized little piles. I love love love to smell it. I love that when it is done, I don't have to deal with it for another week. I love that it is something that I can finish. But mostly I love to smell it.
2. I have OCD. Ask Camille, who also has OCD. Once on our way to St. George to a baseball tournament, I was following her, and I made her pull over in Nephi because I got it in my head that I had forgotten Ty's uniform and even though I could remember putting it in, I HAD to check. I have also been known to spend an entire day and tons of gas driving all over the valley looking for the exact item I needed for a Young Women's lesson or activity, or a Sharing Time. My OCD does not extend to having a perfectly groomed house. :)
So here they are....

6. This year is my 2oth High School Reunion. When my mom had hers, I thought she was so old. I'm not going.
7. I love to listen to Depeche Mode, Yaz and Alphaville. "Forever Young" is my favorite song of all time. Berlin is another big favorite. I, like Jamie, am a 80's music fan. The difference is I was a teenager in the 80's, with the hair and the clothes. :)
