Better than anywhere else.
In keeping with the "Texas is better than everywhere else" theme of this week, last night the 4th grade performed at the PTO meeting. Inviting the music classes to perform is a good way to trick people into attending PTO meetings. The theme for the evening was Texas. They sang 4 songs about Texas, including "Yellow Rose of Texas" and "Texas, Our Texas." The kids all dressed up in western wear and they had kids portraying Sam Houston, and a Texas ranger, a Texas cowboy, and to throw in some humor, a Texas Ranger (baseball player) and a Dallas Cowboy (football player). Parker thought the whole dialog was hilarious!

And, sorry for the darkness, the flash makes everything funny in auditoriums, here he is during the performance. In the mornings at school, the kids pledge allegiance to the Texas flag and the state of Texas. I asked Parker if you pledge allegiance to Texas, and then you move out of state, are you still more concerned about Texas than anywhere else, or do you move your loyalties to your new state? And he answered, "If you move, I guess you are just betraying Texas." Oh.
If there is still any doubt that Texas is the boldest and the grandest, read the words to our state song. They wouldn't sing it if it weren't true!

Seriously, I know we all sound like freakazoids ... it's something you can't possibly understand until you live here. Not even visiting will do. And it was something that I didn't understand until moving out of the state for the first time when I was 12. We came back when I was 14, but I swear, those two years will always be the longest years of my life. I went through Texas withdrawls. No lie.
I just want to know, did they sing "Deep in the Heart of Texas"? If not, your night was not complete.
I can't remember, I'll ask Parker. I just remember "singing singing singing TEXAS singing singing words TEXAS yada yada yada TEXAS." And I remember the Yellow Rose of Texas and boldest and grandest and TEXAS. I was all quite overwhelming. :)
